First Outing 2017 Whilton Mill Karting

Last weekend saw Rhys Anthony shake off the cob webs and get back into racing mode after a successful 2016.

Weather was bitterly cold with temperatures not rising much above 3 degrees all weekend.

With many changes to the Junior Rotax Kart from new evo engine to new D2 tyres.

All drivers were coming to terms with this. I being Rhys mechanic was struggling to get the set up right for him.

The new tyres causing most of the problem as they were taking 2 to 3 laps to warm up. Once we got them going then Rhys was pretty much on the pace.

Race Day

This saw random grids for the three heats to decide final grid placing. Rhys was struggling all day to get the tyres to work.

After the three heats Rhys was one place of the back of the grid in 14th for the final.

The final saw him have his best race of the day and eventually finishing 9th. The good news was that we made progress through out the weekend. I have to go back to basics and get the set up better for our next meeting which is in February.

The Final Round Lydd Karting Winter Championship

First weekend that the weather was great. No tyre decisions this meeting slicks all the way.

I had my best weekend ever.

I qualified in pole shaving time off the lap record.

Heat 1 I was jump started and eventually got the lead back and went on to set a new lap record.

Heat 2 I led this from start to finish times were not as quick as heat 1

The final saw me lead again from start to finish. During the race I lost the lap record in lap 4 and I then matched the new lap record in lap 7. As I only matched the record it is credited to the driver who set the time first.

Lydd 13th March 16 TrophyAnother clean sweep with the added bonus of matching the lap record.

I am now looking forward to the April meeting were I should be crowned Lydd Karting Winter Champion.

I would like to thank all my sponsors for helping me achieve this. Richlee Motor Company, Mir Raceline & CZ Chains.

Thank you to engine builder Supertune.

I hope I can now go on and produce some more great results in the Summer Championship.

Ellough Park Raceway Round 1 2016 Championship

What an eventful day. A 4.30am start as we needed to travel 90 plus miles. Dad went to start the car and de-ice it only to find it would not start. Mum to the rescue jump leads out, and a quick bit of jiggling with the cars at 5am car starts away we go. Sorry neighbours.

The weather conditions dictated with an icy track and a flurry of sleet the meeting was shortened by reducing our practice sessions.

We all got one 5 lap practice before qualifying.

Qualifying

This was only the second  time of racing at Ellough. The regular members had a slight advantage and a couple guessed right on tyre choice.

With a good field of 10 junior drivers off we set on qualifying. I was on inters with 7 others. With a fast drying track I had to make sure of 3rd which I duly did.

Heat 1

Started 3rd got a great start and followed the leader around the first bend. We both pulled away from the pack. I finished 2nd.

Heat 2

Again started 3rd but this time I got a brilliant start and took the lead. I pulled away from the field. This gave me my first heat win in Junior Rotax.

Double Header Weekend

Hi I have just done a double header weekend racing.

Saturday F6 Championship at Bayford Meadows in round 5

I got pole position in wet conditions. I won the first heat and came second in the second heat. I was pole in the final tracked dried out so back to slicks. I won my class again but unfortunately was not able to get the overall win this time. I am Champion elect for the second year running in Honda Cadet Clubman.

I planned my approach perfectly to qualify  and took Pole Position.

Heat 1 saw me lead until the last lap when another driver took a lunge into a corner only to climb over my kart and hurt my arm. I lost 2 places in the process.

Pre Final:- Started 3rd but was in quite a bit of pain still and could only manage a 4th position finish.

The Final:- Starting 4th not my best of starts dropped to 6th place but gradually started to make my way forward. The rain started to come down with a couple of laps to go I like the wet conditions and saw my opportunity and took it to move into 3rd place. On the final lap I was right on the tail of 2nd place and crossed the line half a kart behind. All in all another good weekend and many thanks to Team Anthony (Mum & Dad) plus a big thank you to Panther Motor Sport for keeping my engine sweet.

Preparing for 2015

I am building my strength up as my plans for next season are to race Junior Max in the BNL Championship in Europe. I mentioned in my Bayford Meadows post earlier that I was a little off on the day. The reason why is I had just come from a challenging Buckmore Round on the previous Sunday where I finished 2nd. On the Wednesday I did a full days practice with Daemon and Panther Motorsport in a Tony Kart doing Junior Max. I did over 100 laps. The Saturday saw me win the F6 4th Round at Buckmore Park and then it was onto Bayford on the Sunday.

Things are getting exciting as I am now preparing for the next phase of my karting career. Please keep reading and I will keep you all posted.

Bayford Meadows Summer Round 4

I was not at my best for this meeting I will explain in next post.

I qualified 9th which meant I would have to perform well in my two heats to get a good grid position for the final.

Heat 1 saw me make a little progress but I unfortunately was involved in a racing incident and was deemed in the wrong and had to lose 5 places.

Heat 2 :- started and finished in the same position so no progress. The combined results put me 13th on the Final Grid.

Here I drove the best all day which saw me claw myself up into 5th place.

Many thanks to Panther Motorsport and Mum & Dad

Catch up News

Hi been really busy since my last post with school work and lots more karting. I have had some great results over the past couple of months.

Rhys Pole At Bayford April 2014

Pole At Buckmore April 2014

I am still leading the 2014 F6 Honda Cadet Clubman Championship. I am lying in the top 3 in the following championships. Kent Kart Championship, Buckmore Park Championship and Bayford Meadows Championship.

I also managed to squeeze in the East Anglian Trophy Meeting at Kimbolton on the 7th and 8th of June. I raced against some of the current best Cadets in the Country on a track I had never raced on before. I gained a lot of experience and did myself proud by finishing in the top 15 in the Sunday Final.

I am also in the process of testing out a Junior Max Kart which I intend racing next season in the BNL championship in Europe.

F6 Championship 2014 Round 1

The first round and the New ‘F’ Plate (replaced the ‘O’ Plate) was held at Blackbushe Kart Circuit.

The Weather was great and we had a reasonable turnout of 9 drivers in the cadet classes. We all raced together. I am doing the Clubman Class  and I won my class so I am now the ‘F’ Plate holder and round 1 winner. Next round is at Bayford Meadows on the 19th April.

Winter Championship

Since end of February to end of March I have been really busy finishing the Buckmore Park Winter Championship (Champion Yipee more to follow). I started the 2014 Kent Championship Bayford Meadows Summer Championship 2014 and F6 Championship 2014.

Buckmore Park Winter Championship 2014:-

The final round:- I just needed to keep my main rivals from scoring more points than I had already accumulated in rounds 1 and 2  in order to be the Winter Honda Cadet Clubman Champion.

It was a very busy meeting as all the top drivers are using these race days for prior practice to their championship round later in the year.

This meant we had a big field in my class with some overspill from the Cadet class. Winning this round was not going to be easy.

I started the day 2pts clear of my rivals I just needed to keep them from outscoring me to win.

Qualifying:- This did not go well I qualified 18th with all my main rivals ahead of me. I had two heats to get myself in a good position for the final.

Rhys Racing At Buckmore March 16th 2014

Heat 1 :- Saw me move up the grid to 10th still some seven place behind my main challenger. I was beginning to wonder if this was not going to be my day. Dad and Mum gave some reassuring support and said the points do not count until the final and your grid position in the final.

Heat 2:- I made my challenge at got myself into 6th for the final but still 3 places down on my rival. The overspill cadet drivers were dominating up front and there were a couple behind us who I guessed would pull all stops in the final.

The Final:- My points tally for this round would not be better than what I had already achieved in the first 2 rounds. But my main rival sitting 3rd on the grid could out score me if he finished better than 5th.

I knew I had to somehow get ahead of him but also needed a couple of other drivers to do the same.

The 12 lap race started I got pushed out wide on the first bend dropping me back to 5 places to 11th I was now totally relying on my rival to drop back. He got off to a good start and held his third place for 2 laps before dropping to 4th then 5th. I was not aware of this until around lap 9 when I saw him in the kart just ahead of the one I was tracking down. By lap 10 I had made up 3 places from my bump off. On lap 11 I was right on the tail of my main rival and eventually over took him on the last lap. As the scores worked out I had provisionally won the championship. I got confirmation on the following Wednesday that I had won by 2pts.  I will be collecting my trophy on 11th May at round 2 of the Summer Championship.

Rhys After Final at Buckmore Knowing he won the Winter Championship 2014

What a year I have had I only started out in my own Kart March 2013. I have won the F6 2013 Cadet Championship, finished 4th in Buckmore Summer 2013 Championship and 5th in the Kent 2013 Championship and now won the Buckmore 2014 Winter Championship.

Rhys with New Suit & Some Trophies

Big thank you MIR Raceline for my fantastic new race suit. (Cheers Rick).

Big thanks to Panther Motors for the fantastic job done on my race engines.

And Finally thanks Mum & Dad for all your support with my Kart Racing.

Buckmore Park Winter Championship Round 2

This meeting caused mechanic Dad and Data Controller Mum a few headaches.

The weather on the Saturday was gusting winds and rain. We fortunately missed this as Dad had other commitments.

Race Day sunny but cold temperature hovering around 3 degrees. The track showed very ice track. Marshals gritted the shady parts of the track as the sun did its best on the rest.

Practice, Qualifying, Heat1 and Pre final resulted in varying combinations of wets and inters. The final saw as go for Slicks while the majority stayed on inters.

Qualifying was not great we were accommodating the IAME class which hindered all of us. I ended up Qualifying 6th in my class.

Heat 1 I gained two places so started the pre final in 4th.

Pre Final : Unfortunately saw me being blocked by a slower IAME and I lost a place.

Final: I choose to run slicks as the track was drying out apart from one corner. This proved to be the right choice as midway through the race I started gaining on the 4 in front. I worked my way into 2nd place only to come up against a slower IAME which cost me 2 places. With 3 laps to go I made my charge reeling in 3rd place. On the final lap I was catching the second kart only to miss out on line. So 3rd is where I finished. This gave me enough points to still hold onto the overall championship lead.
